Advanced Sugar Clarification & Wastewater Treatment with VSEP® Vibratory Membrane Systems
A Modern Alternative to Conventional Clarification in Sugar Production
Sugar refining—whether from sugar cane or sugar beets, relies on efficient sugar clarification to remove impurities before evaporation and crystallization. Traditional clarification methods are well‑established but come with limitations that reduce yield, increase chemical usage, and create large volumes of sludge and wastewater.
VSEP® (Vibratory Shear Enhanced Process) Microfiltration (MF) provides a high‑efficiency, low‑chemical, and compact alternative to conventional clarifiers. With its patented vibratory shear technology, VSEP® separates suspended solids with exceptional clarity—reducing operating costs and improving overall plant performance.
Conventional Sugar Clarifying Processes
Sugar juice extracted from cane or beet undergoes several steps to remove suspended solids, color bodies, and impurities.
1. Traditional Clarification of Cane Sugar Juice
Most raw cane juice is clarified through:
- Liming
- Heating / Flash Heating
- Flocculant and Coagulant Additives
- Settling Clarifiers (Dorr‑type / clariflocculators)
- Filtration – Rotary Vacuum Drum Filter
Challenges of conventional cane clarification:
- Large equipment footprint
- Heavy polymer and chemical consumption
- High energy use for heating
- Substantial mud and sludge volumes
- Filtrate still contains fine suspended solids and color bodies
2. Conventional Clarification of Beet Sugar Juice
Beet processors rely heavily on carbonation:
- Liming followed by carbonation (CO₂ addition)
- Large carbonation tanks and settling basins
- Filtration of calcium‑rich sludge – Rotary Leaf Filters
Challenges of conventional beet clarification:
- High lime and CO₂ usage
- Massive sludge production
- Filtrate clarity varies depending on beet quality
- Disposal costs for lime sludge (typically 6–10% solids)
VSEP® Microfiltration: A High‑Performance Alternative to Conventional Clarification
VSEP® MF replaces or supplements traditional clarifiers, providing an advanced membrane‑based separation technology that handles high‑solids fluids without fouling.
How VSEP® Works
- The membrane module vibrates at high frequency.
- Intense shear prevents solids from building up on the membrane surface.
- Feed slurry is separated into:
- Clear permeate (ultra‑low turbidity)
- Concentrated solids (ideal for further processing or disposal)
Benefits for Sugar Producers
- Superior Juice Clarity
- Reduce or Eliminate Chemicals
- Increased Sugar Yield
- Compact Footprint
- Continuous, Automated Operation
- Valuable By‑products
Concentrated solids can be:
- Added back to bagasse or beet pulp
- Used as feedstock
- Processed into bioenergy substrates
Wastewater & Mud Treatment in Sugar Production
Both cane and beet processing produce large streams of wastewater and a sludge known as mud.
Typical Sugar Factory Effluents Include:
- Clarifier mud / press mud / filter cake
- Backwash water from filters
- Condensate streams
- Floor washdown water
- Cooling and boiler blowdown
- High‑BOD wastewater from plant operations
Conventional Treatment Methods
- Settling Ponds / Evaporation Ponds
Low-cost but large land footprint, odor issues, and limited effectiveness.
- DAF (Dissolved Air Flotation)
Removes fats, fibers, and floating solids but leaves dissolved contaminants.
- Aerated Lagoons & Biological Treatment
Reduces BOD/COD but requires space and steady feedwater quality.
- Belt Press / Filter Press for Mud
Generates semi-solid cake, often used as soil amendment.
Pain Points of Traditional Systems:
- Inconsistent quality of treated water
- High-energy aeration systems
- Large sludge handling requirements
- Regulatory pressure on discharge and reuse
How VSEP® Improves Sugar Industry Wastewater Treatment
1. VSEP® for Sugar Factory Wastewater & Condensate Polishing
VSEP® RO can:
- Remove suspended solids, fats, proteins, fibers
- Lower BOD/COD with RO
- Deliver water clean enough for reuse in:
- Washing
- Cooling towers
- Irrigation
- Boiler feed (with polishing)
This reduces freshwater consumption and wastewater discharge.
2. VSEP® Concentrates Mud and Sludge Streams
- Thickens mud far beyond traditional filter presses
- Produces a drier, more manageable solids product
- Reduces hauling and disposal costs
3. VSEP® Enhances Biogas Production
When used to concentrate organics from wastewater:
- Higher-strength waste improves digester performance
- Permeate becomes easy-to-treat or reuse water
- Stabilizes biological systems by removing inhibitory solids
Case Study – Beet Process Mud Dewatering
New Logic commissioned a MF VSEP system at a sugar beet facility to dewater press mud from a drum filter. The material was stored in ponds and contained a lot of moisture. A 0.2µm MF membrane was used to volume reduce the slurry by 75% with a flux rate of 70 GFD. VSEP Samples shown below.

Case Study – Cane Sugar Juice Clarification
A VSEP demonstration was completed to clarify cane sugar juice having solids of 65%. A 200 kDa UF PVDF membrane was used at 70ºC to recover 85% of the volume and filtrate with < 1 mg/L TSS and ash. The system operated at 100 psi with an average flux of 15 GFD.

Case Study – Sugar Concentration
Often expired sugar drinks or product become waste. If these can be volume reduced and the sugar content increased, the concentrate can have value as an animal feed supplement. VSEP has been demonstrated several times using RO to concentrate sugar. During one of these operations, VSEP with RO concentrated the sugar brix from 8º to 24º operating at 700 psi with a flux of 12 GFD.
