VSEP® for Rare Earth Elements (REE): Effluent Treatment, Acid Recovery & ZLD
VSEP (Vibratory Shear Enhanced Processing) is a patented membrane filtration technology that uses high‑frequency vibration to prevent fouling and enable RO/NF/UF treatment of extremely difficult feeds related to rare earth elements such as acids, saturated brines, tailings ponds, and solids‑laden slurries. VSEP reduces thermal ZLD load, recovers and purifies acid, protects SX/IX circuits, and recycles water.
VSEP for Rare Earth Elements – What It Does
- Reduces thermal ZLD load
- Recovers and purifies acids (HCl, H₂SO₄, H₃PO₄)
- Protects SX/IX from crud and suspended solids
- Removes uranium, thorium and metals
- Polishes PLS and thickener overflow
- Enables high water recovery with smaller evaporators
Where VSEP Fits Best in REE Flowsheets
REE Simplified Process:
Ore → Crush/Mill → Beneficiation → 50–60% REE Concentrate → Cracking (acid/alkali) → Leaching → Solvent Extraction / Ion Exchange → REE Oxides → Metal Reduction
1) Beneficiation & PLS/Thickener Overflow Polishing
Application: Flotation thickener overflow, reagent‑laden water, colloidal fines, oils.
Problems in REE Plants: High turbidity, organics, crud formation in SX, RO fouling.
How VSEP is used: NF/RO to remove colloids, oils, color, metals → permeate for reuse or RO feed; concentrate returns to tailings/waste.
2) Chloride Leach Circuits (Bastnäsite & carbonate ores; HCl)
Application: HCl process/bleed liquor, CaCl₂ brines with metals and suspended solids.
Problems in REE Plants: Rising chloride/TDS, high Ca/scale risk, large evaporator duty.
How VSEP Helps: VSEP NF retains metals/solids/radionuclides prior to evaporation. VSEP RO for brine concentration <50 g/L before thermal ZLD, cutting evaporator/crystallizer size.
3) Sulfate Leach Circuits (H₂SO₄, gypsum-forming)
Application: Purification bleed, raffinate with CaSO₄ near saturation, metals, silica.
Problems in REE Plants: Gypsum scaling, high sulfate, low pH; high thermal load How VSEP Helps: Acid‑tolerant VSEP NF retains metals/solids/radionuclides prior to evaporation VSEP RO for brine concentration <50 g/L before thermal ZLD, cutting evaporator/crystallizer size.
4) Apatite–Phosphoric Acid Byproduct Purification
Application: “Weak acid” phosphoric acid containing U/Th, Fe/Al/Mg, silica, organics.
Problems in REE Plants: Meeting merchant grade (≈52% P₂O₅) after evaporation concentrates radionuclides and impurities without pre‑polishing.
How VSEP Helps: VSEP Acid‑tolerant NF purifies phosphoric acid upstream of evaporation, removing U/Th, metals, colloids, and silica.
5) SX/IX Circuit Protection (Crud & Phase Separation Control)
Application: SX feed/raffinate/strip with fines, organics, emulsions.
Problems in REE Plants: Crud formation, phase disengagement delays, extractant losses.
How VSEP Helps: Fine solids & organics removal (UF/NF/RO) to stabilize SX/IX, improve phase separation, and extend organic life.
6) ZLD Integration (All Flowsheets)
VSEP pre‑concentrates brines far beyond conventional RO, cutting evaporator and crystallizer duty.
Why VSEP Works in Difficult REE Streams
- High‑frequency vibratory shear suppresses fouling and concentration polarization.
- Handles extreme feeds: low pH acids, colloid, high TDS, metals, silica, oils, color bodies.
- Concentrates to high solids before thermal steps.
- Membrane menu: RO, NF, acid‑recovery NF, and UF for TSS removal
Why VSEP works where spiral membranes cannot:
| Challenge | Spiral RO/NF | VSEP |
| Fouling with organics/colloids | Rapid fouling | Vibratory shear suppresses fouling |
| High solids | Cannot process | VSEP handles slurries |
| Low pH acids | Membrane failure | Acid‑tolerant NF membranes |
| High TDS | Low recovery | Up to 200 g/L (depending on chemistry) |
| Scaling brines | Scaling limits | Crystallization away from membrane |
VSEP Limitations & Design Considerations
- Recovery limited by osmotic pressure and viscosity
- Acid recovery NF depends on speciation
- Temperature typically limited to 60°C
- Prescreening may be required to remove solids >100 µm
- VSEP cannot accept aromatic solvents and oxidizers
Design note: Actual performance is stream‑specific. We pilot test to select membrane type, flux, recovery, and pretreatment options.
What VSEP Accepts (Inputs)
- pH 0–12 acids
- TDS up to 200 g/L
- Colloids, fines, oils, organics
- Heavy metals and radionuclides
- Silica and hardness
- High solids slurries
What VSEP Produces (Outputs)
- Permeate: low-turbidity water or purified acid
- Concentrate: reduced‑volume brine ready for evaporation
- Solids: dewatered cake (UF applications)
(All ranges are indicative; final results based on piloting and membrane selection.)
How We Validate Performance
- Bench-scale testing
- Onsite pilot testing (7-30 days typical)
- Parameters measured: flux, temperature, pressure, rejection rates, recovery rate
- Deliverables: projection reports, membrane selection, pretreatment design
VSEP in Effluent Treatment
Industries Using VSEP
- Rare Earth mining & refining
- Phosphate & phosphoric acid production
- Battery metals (Ni, Co, Li)
- Copper SX–EW
- Uranium & radionuclide purification
- Mineral processing (flotation circuits)
Why it works:
- Vibratory shear prevents fouling and concentration polarization
- Allows concentration to very high solids, far beyond solubility limits
- Handles viscous slurries, brines, and mineral-rich leachates
In essence, VSEP bridges the gap between conventional membrane filtration and thermal ZLD, uniquely enabling membrane treatment where it was previously impossible.
Proven in Mining & REE Applications
Case Study – Molycorp – Mountain Pass
In 1997, New Logic installed a VSEP NF system to treat TENORM effluent at Molycorp’s Mountain Pass REE mine in Southern California. The facility mined the Bastnäsite ore and concentrated the rare earth elements using floatation and floatation aides. The beneficiation resulted in concentrated REE that was then shipped for refining elsewhere. The VSEP was used to treat transport water with slight radioactivity as part of remediation and water recycling operations. The VSEP system removed uranium, metals, colloids, and organics. The Molycorp system operated for over a decade with periodic membrane replacement and maintained stable flux despite colloids and radionuclides.”

Case Study – Lynas – Mt. Weld, Laverton Australia
In 2012, New Logic provided demonstration VSEP equipment to filter the thickener overflow containing colloids, lime, organics, mineral oil, and metals. The VSEP removed these materials leaving 85% as a dilute monovalent ion NF filtrate that fed an existing RO spiral system use to make clean water for reuse. Membrane performance remained stable over the entire 2‑month pilot test.
Feed: Thickener overflow with colloids, organics, lime, metals, oil
Technology: VSEP NF ahead of spiral RO
Recovery: 85% NF permeate
Key reductions:
- Turbidity: 250,000 → 1.4 NTU measured via standard NTU (ISO 7027) methods
- Fe: 1,300 → 0.15 mg/L
- Mn: 110 → 0.015 mg/L
Outcome: Stable RO operation, cleaner water reuse

Case Study – Arafura Rare Earths – Alice Springs, Australia
Arafura Rare Earths plans to mine apatite ore at its Nolans mine site near Alice Springs. Apatite ore is high in Phosphorous and when the ground ore is leached with sulfuric acid, concentrated phosphoric acid is produced. This project has completed FEED and is planning to start equipment procurement in Q1 2026. In the initial design phase, New Logic conducted one year of demonstration testing using acid tolerant NF membrane to purify the phosphoric acid removing uranium, thorium, colloids and an assortment of metals so that the phosphoric acid could meet merchant grade requirements. The VSEP system design has been finalized and will be included after the FID is completed.
