VSEP Technology used for Manure Management
For thousands of years, the traditional method of manure disposal has been land application, using manure as fertilizer. However, this approach becomes problematic when land is limited, over-fertilized, or inaccessible due to seasonal conditions. In colder regions, frozen ground can prevent manure application for much of the year. In areas with high concentrations of large-scale animal farms—such as those raising pigs or cows—available land for disposal may be scarce or located far away. This is the case in Northern Italy, where New Logic Research installed a VSEP system to address this challenge. In that region, farmers often need to haul manure over 100 kilometers to find suitable land.
New Logic Research has extensive experience treating manure from cows, pigs, chickens, and even mink. Raw or anaerobically digested manure contains high levels of ammonia, dissolved solids, and chemical oxygen demand (COD). Many regions impose strict limits on nitrogen application to reduce greenhouse gas emissions—particularly nitrous oxide—and to prevent contamination of groundwater and surface water with nitrates.
While conventional spiral-wound reverse osmosis (RO) membranes have been used for manure treatment, they typically require complex and costly pre-treatment systems. RO membranes are capable of producing drinking water-quality effluent, but their limitations make them less ideal for manure applications. This is where VSEP technology offers a superior solution.
VSEP (Vibratory Shear Enhanced Processing) RO membranes oscillate 50 times per second, generating high shear at the membrane surface. This action minimizes fouling and scaling, allowing for efficient processing. Each 84-inch VSEP module can treat between 50–100 m³/day of raw or digested manure. A conventional spiral RO system is then used to polish the permeate, further reducing ammonia and COD to acceptable discharge levels. Each VSEP unit typically recovers 75–80% of the input volume as clean water, suitable for discharge or reuse. The remaining 20–25% is concentrated nutrient slurry, which can be hauled for land application or dried and sold as bagged organic fertilizer.
The VSEP manure filtration system is compact, automated, and user-friendly. Minimal pre-treatment is required—typically just a screw press or screen to remove large particles such as sand. Since no chemicals are used in the process, the nutrient concentrate qualifies as organic. To date, New Logic Research has deployed more than two dozen VSEP manure treatment systems worldwide.
