Overview
Coal-fired power plants generate significant volumes of fly ash leachate, a byproduct formed when rainwater percolates through fly ash piles. It is estimated that one billion tons of fly ash are produced each year. The leachate from this fly ash often contains arsenic, mercury, lead, cadmium, sulfates, and other heavy metals, making it a regulated wastewater stream under EPA compliance standards, driving the need for Fly Ash Leachate Treatment.
Traditional management involves simply storing this fly ash leachate in ponds, but these ponds pose major environmental and financial risks. In 2009, the EPA identified 44 high-risk ash ponds that posed a risk of failure. There are an estimated 1,500 storage ponds nationwide, some exceeding 1,500 acres. Accidental failures caused by mother nature or aging infrastructure are a risk. A 2008 spill of one billion gallons of fly ash leachate resulted in $1 billion remediation costs not to mention very bad publicity.
Why Treat Fly Ash Leachate Immediately?
Eventually, ash pond water will need to be treated. Ponds may get maxed out or even shut down upon closure.
- Reduce liability: Avoid catastrophic pond failures and groundwater contamination.
- Meet EPA discharge limits: Sulfate, heavy metals, and TDS must be removed.
- Optimize land use: Eliminate large storage ponds and reclaim valuable property.
- Lower lifecycle costs: Treating water as it’s generated is more cost-effective than deferred treatment.
Challenges with Conventional Treatment
- Evaporators: High energy consumption, frequent cleaning, and scaling issues.
- Spiral RO membranes: Require extensive pretreatment and achieve low recovery rates, increasing brine volume and evaporator size.
VSEP – Advanced RO Membrane Solution for Fly Ash Leachate Treatment
VSEP (Vibratory Shear Enhanced Process) is a patented reverse osmosis (RO) system designed for industrial wastewater treatment, including fly ash leachate, scrubber water (FGD), and cooling tower blowdown.
Key Advantages
- No pretreatment required – Handles high hardness and suspended solids.
- High recovery rates – Up to 93% clean water recovery.
- Membrane crystallizer function – Gypsum precipitates away from the membrane surface.
- Lower operating costs – Compared to evaporators and conventional RO systems.
How it works:
The patented VSEP membrane system employs torsional oscillation of the membrane. The agitation and high shear that is produced at the membrane surface disrupts concentration polarization and inhibits or even completely prevents membrane scaling and fouling. The VSEP filtration process does allow precipitation of gypsum, but instead of crystallization happening on the membrane, it occurs away from the membrane as the shear decays and propagates on seed crystals and suspended solids in the bulk flow. VSEP is in fact a membrane crystallizer.
Case Study – Indiana Coal Power Plant – Fly Ash Leachate Treatment
- Flow rate: 50 GPM fly ash leachate.
- Feed water: ~10,000 µS conductivity, 1% total solids.
- VSEP Performance:
- Recovery: 93%.
- Permeate conductivity: 365 µS.
- Sulfate: <200 mg/L.
Result: No pretreatment required, even for sand particles. Even though the feed water had low turbidity and suspended solids, the final VSEP concentrate showed high turbidity and suspended solids precipitation after a nearly 20x concentration.
Applications
- Fly ash leachate treatment
- Ash pond closure solutions
- Coal power plant wastewater
- Heavy metal removal
- Sulfate reduction
Contact Us
The VSEP power plant effluent system has been used since 1987 for many of the leading power producers in the country. New Logic can supply a VSEP fly ash leachate treatment system for your ash pond as well. New Logic can also supply full-scale pilot testing equipment to your facility so you can try it out. Why wait and store all that water that has to be treated anyway. You can remove this liability and eliminate the need for storage ponds.
