Polymer Manufacturing and Membrane Filtration
Polymer manufacturing involves thousands of petrochemical products created through polymerization and chemical reactions. These processes often result in emulsions or stable dispersions of polymer microparticles. To produce a usable final product, it is essential to separate the polymer from water and other unwanted components that result from this polymer manufacturing process.
VSEP (Vibratory Shear Enhanced Processing) membrane filtration offers a highly precise separation method, utilizing over 200 types of membranes ranging from microfiltration to reverse osmosis. Its unique design—featuring wide membrane spacing and high shear forces from torsional oscillation—enables effective filtration of viscous materials. This makes VSEP ideal for dewatering or desalting polymer manufacturing products.
In some applications, simple water removal from the emulsion is sufficient. In others, additional purification is required to eliminate monomers or inorganic salts that are present from the polymer manufacturing process. This can be achieved through diafiltration, a process that washes the polymer with successive dilutions of clean water using ultrafiltration or nanofiltration membranes.
New Logic has successfully implemented numerous VSEP systems in polymer manufacturing, with PVC latex dewatering being one of the most common applications. Beyond product processing, VSEP technology is also used for wastewater treatment. As environmental regulations tighten, particularly around the discharge of monomers and fluorinated polymers generated during polymer manufacturing, VSEP provides a reliable solution for compliance and sustainability.
