VSEP® Beer Bottoms Filtration System
Maximize Brewery Yield • Reduce Waste • Recover More Sellable Beer
Every brewery loses valuable beer during fermentation due to yeast and trub settling at the tank bottom, typically 2–3% of total production. But modern membrane technology has proven that the extract trapped in surplus yeast can be recovered when properly filtered, making beer bottoms filtration essential.
VSEP® (Vibratory Shear Enhanced Processing) is the next-generation solution for maximizing that recovery. By using high-frequency vibration to eliminate fouling boundary layers, VSEP® maintains high flux even with dense yeast solids—yielding a clarified beer permeate suitable for immediate reintegration into your brewing process.
New Logic can also extend the same VSEP® efficiency to EOP (End‑of‑Pipe) wastewater treatment with Reverse Osmosis. VSEP® RO can complement existing wastewater treatment systems or even replace them, helping breweries meet stringent discharge limits, reduce wastewater volumes, and achieve maximum water recycling potential. With the addition of evaporation, achieving ZLD is also possible.
The Brewing Process & Where Beer Loss Occurs
During fermentation and maturation, yeast settles out and forms a dense layer at the bottom of tanks. This yeast-rich slurry contains significant quantities of beer that would otherwise go to waste. Industry data shows:
- Beer losses from excess yeast typically account for 2–3% of total brewery output.
- Advanced filtration systems have shown that the extract contained in surplus yeast can be recovered, provided the right technology is used.
For high-volume breweries, this represents thousands of barrels reclaimed per year, beer that would otherwise be lost.

| Extract Content | Up to 11.5° Plato (in surplus yeast mixtures) |

Introducing VSEP® Vibratory Microfiltration for Beer Recovery
Previously licensed and deployed in Europe under a different brand, VSEP® brings the same vibratory membrane technology directly from New Logic Research, the inventors of vibratory filtration. VSEP is optimized specifically for breweries seeking higher yields.
What VSEP® Does
VSEP® clarifies beer bottoms by separating suspended yeast, protein, and solids from the beer trapped within them. The result is:
- High-clarity recovered beer, suitable for blending back into production
- A concentrated yeast stream that is easier to manage, reuse, or sell
This is achieved using VSEP®’s patented vibration‑based membrane separation technology.
Membrane Filtration Architecture
- Membrane Type: Teflon 0.05 µm Microfiltration (MF) polymeric membrane
- Operating Mode: Vibratory shear-enhanced processing (VSEP®)
- Vibration Mechanism: High‑frequency torsional oscillation at the membrane surface to continuously disrupt boundary layers through resonance.
Why Traditional Beer Bottoms Filtration Falls Short
Conventional filters and clarifiers (crossflow, tangential flow, centrifuges) face a common challenge:
formation of fouling boundary layers on the membrane surface or poor settling and density obstructions. As solids accumulate, filtration rates drop sharply, causing:
- Low throughput
- Frequent cleaning cycles
- Reduced membrane life
- High operating costs
How VSEP® Overcomes Fouling with Vibration
VSEP® (Vibratory Shear Enhanced Processing) uses high-frequency torsional vibration to create intense shear at the membrane surface. This shear effectively disrupts the boundary layer before it can form. The vibration is generated through resonance which consumes very little energy.
What this means for breweries:
- Consistently high flux even with dense yeast slurries
- Minimal fouling compared to static or crossflow systems
- Longer membrane life
- Higher solids handling capability
- Significantly greater beer recovery at lower operating costs
While competitors rely on pumping velocity and laminar flow where the shear decays as you approach the membrane to prevent fouling, VSEP® does it using low-energy resonance.
How Much More Beer Can You Recover?
Based on industry benchmarks:
- Beer losses from tank bottoms average 2–3% of total production.
- Up to 60% extract recovery from yeast bottoms is achievable with advanced filtration.
Recovering even half of this lost volume can increase brewery profitability significantly, delivering noticeable ROI in months, not years.
Benefits of VSEP® for Breweries and Beer Bottoms Filtration
- Increased Beer Yield
- Lower Operating & Disposal Costs
- Consistent, High-Quality Filtrate
