VSEP Technology Supports Sustainable Water Solutions in Northern California Wineries
EMERYVILLE, CA, Jan. 26, 2010 — Northern California is known for its fine wines, but few consider the environmental impact of winery operations while enjoying a glass of cabernet sauvignon. To address this challenge, Riechers Spence and Associates and Heritage Systems joined forces to create Kantharos Process Water Systems. Their mission is to provide the best in engineering services and process water systems tailored for the winery market.
Modernizing Water Use in Winemaking
While many aspects of winemaking have evolved over the past fifty years, water use and wastewater treatment practices have remained largely unchanged. Kantharos sought to transform this by finding an innovative and efficient separation system that could improve sustainability.
With the assistance of New Logic Research’s engineering team, Kantharos conducted an extensive study of VSEP (Vibratory Shear Enhanced Processing) membrane technology at one of the world’s most well-known wineries, Kendall-Jackson in Oakville, California.
The results were highly successful. Based on these findings, the first commercial VSEP installation is now being implemented at Kendall-Jackson’s Santa Rosa facility.
Reducing Fresh Water Demand Through Innovation
“Our team realized that through the use of vibratory membrane technologies, we could drastically reduce the volume of fresh water needed for process washing,” said Hugh Linn, President of Riechers Spence and Associates. “By using innovative engineering and environmental practices, we were able to design a fully integrated approach to water management and conservation.”
A Partnership for Greener Wineries
“Our (former) Emeryville location is just an hour from Napa Valley, so it’s a natural fit for us,” said Greg Johnson, CEO of New Logic Research. “We’ve been building VSEP systems for the industrial market for over twenty years, but Kantharos saw the potential for reducing water use and reclaiming valuable Napa Valley real estate through their innovative recycling process. We’re excited about the partnership and the potential for growth in this market.”
Through this collaboration, New Logic Research granted Kantharos exclusive rights to winery applications in Northern California. Alongside the Kendall-Jackson installation, numerous additional winery projects are now in development.
